Home Remedies for Food Poisoning
What is Food Poisoning?
Food poisoning is also known as botulism. It is one of the common stomach ailments, generally mild in nature but in rare cases it becomes severe. The main cause behind food poisoning is the contaminated food. Bacteria forms toxin substance in improperly stored or cooked food, which when eaten causes food poisoning.
Most food poisonings do not require the use of over–the–counter medicines to stop diarrhea, but they are generally safe if used as directed. It is not recommended that these medications be given to children. If there is a question or concern, you should always check with your doctor.
HOME REMEDIES FOR FOOD POISONING
Keep the patient in bed and give nothing by mouth as long as the nausea and vomiting persist.
As the vomiting subsides, give sips of some warm drink, such as tea, barley or rice water.
Use a plastic cutting board instead of a wooden one. Be sure to thoroughly clean the cutting board after you’ve finished using it.
Gradually re-introduce soft and easily digestible foods after the symptoms have diminished. You can return to normal diet, after diarrhea stops and your appetite increases.
To prevent dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting, drink plenty of clear fluids.
Bananas are rich in potassium, which will help you recover from food poisoning faster. Try eating at least three or four bananas a day.
Drink sports drinks in order to replenish lost fluids from your body.
Drinking the juice of four lemons to which a little sugar has been added will kill the bacteria responsible for home remedies for food poisoning.
Use a plastic cutting board and try and use separate boards for meat and vegetables
Scrub or peel vegetables and fruit before eating them raw.
Mix a tablespoon of lemon juice or cider vinegar in a cup of hot water before a meal to prevent acid indigestion.
Add three drops of garlic oil to half a cup of Soya oil and rub onto the stomach after food.
For food poisoning treatment drink a herbal tea of mint, raspberry, chamomile and blackberry.
The treatment for most cases of food poisoning is simple: Plenty of rest, lots of liquids and bland foods such as mashed potatoes, rice and bread. The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples and toast)that is used for children with upset stomachs and diarrhea can help ease the symptoms. With proper care, the symptoms should subside within a few days.
Botulism, however, is the exception to the rule and different home remedies for food poisoning are required.
